Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge - #21 "Bride and Prejudice"

Welcome Everyone to our 21st Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge, where this week we thought we would rock out to some Bhangra and Garba - all musical styles from the movie: Bride & Prejudice, which is the Bollywood version of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice". Bollywood is one of the largest film producing industries in the world (the name is derived from splicing Bombay, India with Hollywood, USA). The Bollywood style is filled with muscials, amazing dance numbers and a lot of color and drama and plot twists. This movie, Bride & Prejudice is one of the first crossover movies with a leading Indian Actress: Aishwarya Rai, in an English movie. Aishwarya, was not only crowned Miss World in 1994, but has also been named as the world's most beautiful woman and in India - she is a mega superstart diva.sl

The Requirement this week:
This week's requirement for the movie challenge is to use some Bling!
This movie is filled with all kinds of sparkle, dazzle, twinkles, glimmer and glitz -

so bring out your bling and have some fun!

Quick trivia bits..
  • This is Aishwarya Rai's first movie entirely in English.
  • According to the director Gurinder Chadha, Ashanti's appearance in the film is meant as a homage to a tradition in Bollywood films where a celebrity would make a cameo appearance to sing a song that has no direct involvement in the plot. The rest of the characters do not interact with the celebrity but rather are seen in the crowd enjoying the show.
  • Johnny Depp and Joaquin Phoenix were considered for the role of Darcy. (Sankari is probably going to faint to find out that her Jonny just might have been in the show!) {Brooke, I am reading this and totally fainting! Good thing, I am reading this on my couch! And for all those reading - I am a huge HUGE JD fan - ever since I was 12 - Swoon! :)
  • Aishwarya Rai gained about 20 pounds for this film because she felt it was more suitable for her character to not look like a fashion model and to give her a more realistic appearance. (You Go Girl!)
  • The Punjabi wedding song and dance number took six days to shoot.

  • Many of the background dancers and extras in "A Marriage Has Come To Town" were cast from the local Sikh temple. Gurinder Chadha didn't care if he or she could dance as long as they looked like they were having fun while dancing.

  • Ashanti was on tour during the filming. She had to fly into India during her break to film her part just in time to head back on tour.

  • The phrase "no life without wife" is and old saying by Gurinder Chadha's father.
  • The thick green book that Aishwarya Rai opens at the pool in Goa is a Jane Austen book.
  • In Bollywood cinema, it is taboo to show any sort of sexual contact, even kissing. Instead they usually show some abstract representation of sexual contact, (birds chirping, waves crashing, etc.) or nothing at all. This is why in Lalitha's wedding fantasy, even though she and Darcy lean in to kiss, she leans back before their lips even touch.
Brooke's Bride and Prejudice Inspired Card:

"No LIFE with out wife"
or
"Life it's all around you.. Enjoy"

This is one of my all time Favorite movies.... I think I have watched it 1,000 times including the out-takes and the making of the movie... This movie is totally a take on "Pride and Prejudice" and what a clever way to make this classic story relate to modern day. I also love that a different culture was the focus of this film. It just goes to show that we are not all that different from each other.

My favorite things about India are SANKARI of course. (I love my Sunny Sankari she is the brightest part of my day :) or the brightest part of the middle of the night of which we share a lot of), The colors, Spice, dance and music.. I LOVE Indian food.. I only wish that I could have a good curry with my best Indian Friend... mmmmmmm! The dance moves are totally amazing. You have to be in great physical shape to be able to survive an entire Indian dance.. There are so many dance move in one song alone all telling such an amazing story..

My card is inspired by a few of my very favorite colors from India.. The pinks and oranges are so brilliant.. I chose a white card base because when I was watching this film I noticed all the amazing people and colors were popping of the screen because the background was white.
Here are a few of my favorite scenes from the movie:

There is a crazy dance that one of the sisters do for a dinner party.. Your job is to watch the movie and then tell us what you think... We also want to here what your favorite dance is from the movie...

Sankari's Bride and Prejudice Inspired Card:

I just love Aishwarya Rai (not as much as Madhuri Dixit - but that's a whole other story :) and I love Jane Austen and so it was awesome to watch a movie with both in one place! I have grown up watching Bollywood movies, and even though I don't speak Hindi, I still love singing along and watching movies again and again. Among Bollywood lovers, Aishwarya Rai is a common household name - she is one of the top leading ladies in Bollywood and made the crossover to Hollywood with this movie: Bride and Prejudice. Aish (as she is fondly known), won the 1994 Miss World contest - check out the video of her Miss World crowning here. She was also voted as the World's most beautiful woman almost a decade later. As much as I love Aishwarya - my most favorite actress is Madhuri Dixit but that's a whole other post :)

For my card - I was tossing around so many ideas that it was hard just to pick one - but in the end, I went with one of my favorite songs between Darcy and Lalita where they are on the beach and one of the lines from the song is: two beings in one beating heart. From that sentiment, I wrote: two souls, one heart and used this beautiful red paper that totally reminded me of the wedding saris at the end of the movie. Here I took a picture of my card with one of my wedding saris - since the card is for the wedding of one of my friends.

There are so many awesome dances that its hard to pick just one - but I think my first one is the opening seuqence and also the garba-ras (the one with the sticks). I had a lot of fun watching this movie - and I hope you do too! For more details come and check out my blog!

Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge - #20- The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons

Welcome Everyone to our Oscar Celebration! This idea was inspired by Ann from Creative Antics, who reminded us about the Oscars and so in keeping with that, we thought that we would do something different this saturday and do one of the movies that has been nominated for an Oscar this year: The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons. This is a little different because it is a current movie and we know, that maybe some of you might not have seen it yet, but that's okay - we would love you to play along because the theme of this card is to go vintage.

Can you believe that this is our 20th movie challenge!! Whoa! How time flies. Speaking of time... this movie is all about love lasting through time - through every stage and age. It also explores time spinning backward and moving forward at the same time. There are really some amazing concepts in this week's movie.

You all were so clever in guessing along with us yesterday! You all always amaze us by your guesses!! This movie is inspired from F.Scott Fitzgerald's 1921 inspired short story by the same name. According to Wikipedia, this movie: "has received 13 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress." All of the movies up for nomination are amazing and we can't wait to see who the Oscar goes to tomorrow evening :)

The Requirement this week:
Is to go vintage! Even if you haven't seen this movie, we would love you to play along and make vintage inspired by the tagline from this movie which is:

Life isn't measure in minutes, but in moments.

Brooke's Card inspired by the movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons.

I find it funny that this movie was inspired by a short story.. It's not a short movie. My sweetie and I went to this movie together on a date. I did found myself thinking about the length of this move in the later part of it. My thought were not about the movie being to long but that it had captured my attention for such a long time and still had a great part of the story to go.  Brad pit is so amazing in this move. What a talented actor he is. What a great cast in general...  Cate Blanchett is so perfect for this roll. When I read her bio I was so surprised to not read anything about her dance training! If she was never formally trained she fooled me. She is a beautiful dancer with beautiful lines. She looks so amazing as a mother of 3 and 40 years old her youngest was born in April 2008. She was given good genes that for sure.. Elle Fanning who first plays the young Daisy has the coolest little voice it caught my attention. Listen for it when you watch the movie.. she is really beautiful as well. (Dakota Fanning's little sister). When I was reading about the casting of this movie is was cool to see the other men who plain Benjamin through out the movie in different time periods. They pull it of so well you just think Brad Pitt is playing them all.  Hope you all enjoy learning more about the movie. Run out an see it if you haven't it's a great movie.

Sankari's Card inspired by the movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons.

I had been resisting seeing this movie - I don't know why exactly. I went to see it with one of my dear friends and was somehow not expecting anything huge (I thought it would be a good movie, but nothing spectacular). Well, by the end of the movie - I was just sobbing.... I don't even know why - but I was just in love with the movie... there is something so simple and beautiful about it and I thought Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt (whom, I normally don't really like) were amazing - they both did such an amazing job! I couldn't believe how affected I was by the movie - I can't wait to see it again!

Without giving anything away about the movie - I loved loved loved the theme of a love story moving through time. One of my favorite scenes is when he says to her something like: I want to remember us in this moment as we are right now as they both were looking in the mirror - I totally loved that scene and so that was my inspiration for this card - where I wanted to capture a moment in time. I found pictures of my husband and myself when we were both young and enclosed that in a locket. This is a special card for my husband, who came home last night after a 2 week buisness trip. The little paper pieces that are curling on the top right corner was kinda of like a symbol of time unravelling. I love the little pictures of us when we were a baby - and always have imagined how wonderful it would be if we had grown up together and been together from the very begininng. But I am so thankful and grateful that we found each other and this little card was a little love note for his return.

I can't wait to see the rest of the movies nominated for an Oscar - they all look incredible and I can't wait to find out who the Oscars go to tommorow night. I am so glad that I had a chance to see one of the movies up for an Oscar - if you have a chnace - Give The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons a spin! - can't wait to hear what you think about it! You can check out more pictures and details on my blog.

Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge - #19 - Emma~ By Jane Austin

HAPPY VALENTINE"S DAY!!!

We wish that everyone has a wonderful Valentine's Day today and that today and everyday is filled with love, hugs and joy! Since our Cinema Saturday falls on Valentine's Day, we had to pick a valentine'y movie. We loved Jane Austen's Emma (written in 1815) because of Emma's cupid like tendencies and the sweet romance in this period movie. According to Wikipedia, "prior to starting the novel, Austen wrote, "I am going to take a heroine [Emma] whom no-one but myself will much like." Emma's character matures through the story as she does her match making and as she falls in love. Her adorability has inspired Jane Austen's Emma to be adapted several time in the popular culture: 1972 BBC version of Emma, 1995 Clueless (was inspired by Emma), 1996 Emma (Gwyneth Paltrow), 1996 Emma (Kate Beckinsale),

You can watch the whole Emma movie (the Gwyneth version) on youtube here. This link will take you to the link: Emma part one - and from there there are links to take you to the whole movie. There are 11 parts in total. We both love this movie and hope that you enjoy it too! Here are our cards inspired by Emma:

THE REQUIREMENT THIS WEEK:
We thought that for this week - it would be interesting to use some dots in our cards. So we are aksing that in your cards you use some dots: either in the designer paper, brads, stickles, paper piercing, embellsishments ---
anything at all.
Dot it up :)

Brooke's Emma Inspired Card:

When we were in England, we went into this great antique shop along the river Dart.. There these beauties were just sitting on a glass shelf... I wanted to jump up and down.. I tried not to shout to my DH to come here as fast as he could... He knew when he got over to me what I was so excited about... He even said ... "It's the dark blue" He knew I was going to have these little treasured...xoxo. I even thought about buying one of them for my mom but I just could not bare to part with them... They were a steal by the way. Way cheaper than even brand new.

My inspiration was the cameo work in the white and contrasted by the blue... there is a card so similar to this in one of the late Stampin' Up catalog.. This card is the reason I own this sentiment set.. I just could not get it out of my mind until it was mine. Ironically, it took me months before I ever made this card.. I actually made this card a while back and have saved it for this movie.

One of my favorite parts in Emma is when Emma and Frank Churchill are singing around the piano.. I love the song and voices in the movie... Even if Frank totally take over and commands center stage.. One of those Ohhhhh! heart stop beating moments is when Emma and Mr. Knightly are out on the balcony talking about Mr and Mrs Elton and what rat finks they are for snubbing Harriot Smith. They both have that "ah ha" moment and then share a long over due dance together... I LOVE this movie I watch it over and over again... Gwyneth Paltrow is adorable in this movie.

If you haven't watched "Becoming Jane" yet you have to... It's so fun to see all the aspects of here life come out and see what part of her life inspired her writings.. In the case of Emma the Mr Elton character was inspired by "Jon Warren". Both selfish men but Mr Warren sabotage the happiness of Jane by writing a letter to her loves Uncle and Guardian. Making her intentions much different that they were.  Mister Elton is just totally into himself and assumes all around him admire and adore him...  They both declare there love to Emma and Jane and BOTH are rebuked.... Jane Austen has such a great dramatic and comedic was of writing..

Card Details on Brooke's Blog

Sankari's Emma Inspired: "I believe in Fairytales" Card

I love Jane Austen - love all her writings and I love the movies inspired by her writings. This movie Emma is one that I loved because of Austen's writing and how she she weaves comedy in her writing. I love how Emma grows and realizes what love really is and how we are allowed in on that journey. My favorite part of watching this movie (aside from story and the characters) was enjoying the costumes - I love all their dresses and the colors that they had picked out were beautiful for Emma - simply lovely. I love those Jane Austen inspired dresses and so I made my card inspired by the dress style and the colors of this card are from one of the dresses the Emma wears. The sentiment reads: "I believe in Fairytales" because Emma is constantly trying to create fairytale romances to all her friends and acquaintances .

You can find more details on my blog (later today). I hope that all of you are enjoying your Valentine's day and that everyday is filled with fairytale magic (sometimes I feel like all I get is the cleaning/mopping of Cinderella's life before she becomes the princess... :) LOL! but that's still part of a fairytale right :) Wishing you all Valentine's day cheer! Happy Love Day :)
Hugs to all,
Sankari

Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge - #18 -Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

Good Morning Everyone!

Thanks to all who played along in our guessing game this week! Sorry to have made it a bit harder this week - by only giving you pictures of foliage for the first three pictures :) but you guys did guess the movie after the third sneak peek (Amy's guess!!)

We are so happy to feature the movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon for this week's Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge. This is truly a beautiful movie - with beautiful shots of the landscape, the people, the colors, the beauty of martial arts and the beauty of silence and action. Even for those who might steer away from a martial arts movie, we totally recommend this because it is seriously poetry in motion! This movie was nominated for 6 Academy Awards and won 4 of them including Best Foreign Language Film. The other awards that it won were in Best Cinematography, Best Music, Original Score and Best Art Direction-Set Decoration. It is beautiful to the hears and to the eyes and is simply stunning. These four wins are amongst 90 total nominations worldwide including 73 wins! That is amazing!

You can check out a movie trailer for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon HERE.

A little movie review:
In the early 19th century, martial arts master Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) is about to retire and enter a life of meditation, though he quietly longs to avenge the death of his master, who was killed by Jade Fox (Cheng Pei-pei). He gives his sword, a fabled 400-year-old weapon known as Green Destiny, to his friend, fellow martial arts wizard and secret love Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh), so that she may deliver it to Sir Te (Sihung Lung). Upon arrival in Peking, Yu Shu Lien happens upon Jen (Zhang Ziyi), a vivacious, willful politician's daughter. That night, a mysterious masked thief swipes Green Destiny, with Yu Shu Lien in hot pursuit -- resulting in the first of several martial arts action set pieces during the film. Without giving away the rest of the movie - this film is about friendship, love, loyalty, trust, romance, passion, determination, silence and action and is just breathtaking.

This film was first screened to much acclaim at the 2000 Cannes, Toronto, and New York film festivals and became a favorite when Academy Awards nominations were announced in 2001. It is truly a beautiful movie and has since then paved the way for more visual delights such as "Hero", "House of Flying Daggers" and the Curse of the Golden Flower.

THE ONLY REQUIREMENT THIS WEEK IS TO ADD A LITTLE SPLASH OF RED
(it can be a big splash or little splash, however you would like :)
According to About.com "Red is the color of happiness and prosperity in China and may be used to attract good luck."

Brooke's Card:

When I was reflecting on this movie I was thinking of the beautiful clothing from the "Orient" I though that the "Faux Silk" Technique would be appropriate. The first color that came to mind was "Riding Hood Red" A very Passionate color. I then choose the Pumpkin Pie and Tangerine Tango to add a softness or warmth to the red. Kiwi Kiss was a choice that brought a touch of nature to the card. The green represents the Bamboo that sways in the breeze and is beautifully danced in between characters during scenes of cat and mouse. I used the sentiment "LOVED" to represent the simple and everlasting love between "Li mu bai(Chow Yun-Fat), and Yu Shu Lien(Michelle Yeoh).

This move was the first movie that we ever owned on DVD. My sister gave this to my DH for his birthday to help force us in to the 21st century about 8 years ago. We hadn't made the just from VHS yet. How funny to look back on that to think that technology has change so much even sense then. This is truly one of our favorite movies. The story is so beautiful, the cinema-photography, the costumes and set design are so perfectly designed.

Sankari's Card:

Hi Everyone, I am sad to say that I didn't make a card for this week's challenge :(which is making me so sad - because I have a zillion ideas for a card after watching this movie again).

This week I am on a mini-vacation as I visit my parents - I have to say, that while I was watching this movie with my parents (for pictures of grass for the sneak peek (LOL!) my mother totally fell in love with this movie (which is surprising because she is so not a martial arts kind of movie girl) but she just loved watching the artistry in these scenes. At one point she turned to me and said - "I feel like I have had my exercise for my lifetime just watching this!" I just started laughing - it was so cute!
At the time that this will be posted, I will be on my way to a mini family reunion of sorts :)But I can't wait to come back and see all of your beautiful creations. It was awesome to read all of your guesses (Amy - you totally got it!) and can't wait till next week for our little Valentine's Cinema Saturday!! Hugs to all!!!!

---------------------------------------------------------

So are you ready to play along!! We sure hope you join us this week!

All of you have to do is make a card, layout or altered project that has a splash of red (this could be from flowers, to brads, to paper, to ink, to ribbon - anything at all!) that is inspired by the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and link your creation to our blog by commenting on this post. If you are uploading to SCS please use the keyword: CSCC18 and if you are uploading it to PapercraftPlanet - please use the keyword: cinemasaturday (all lowercase and all ONE word :).

Sneak Peek Reveals

Hi Everyone, Hope that you guys still had fun guessing this one - even though it was involved a lot of foliage :) But even though it was of foliage - Amy guessed this movie: Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, by the third guess :) Here are the full pictures of all the cropped shredded sneak peeks :)

Promise that next week's will have a few more colorful pixils :)

Sneak Peek #1 - The Grass image was cropped from the center of the picture (this one was more for fun - since last week you all guessed the movie from pictures of the sky :)

Sneak Peek #2 - This is from the top of her bun

Sneak Peek #3 - This was cropped from the bottom of his robe as they battled in the bamboo tops. Amy totally guessed it from this picture!! Again - totally amazed that you guessed it from this teensy weensy picture! WOW!

Sneak Peek #4 - This was cropped from the pillar and then rotated (kinda sneaky but it was a sneak peek :)

Sneak Peek#5 - This was cropped across the middle showing the head in the reflection
