Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge - #14- Fellowship of the Ring

Yea!! What a great night of guessing the sneak peeks for this movie (if you missed our conversation - check it out here!!). This week we are proud to present: the first movie of the trilogy of the Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. This is the first volume of the trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkein (published in 1954) - you can read all about the history of this trilogy and the first volume on Wikipedia. These three books were translated to the silver screen and the first movie, The Fellowship of the Ring, directed by Peter Jackson, was released December 2001. According to Wikipedia, the American Film Institute has rated this 5 time winning BAFTA award winning movie, one of the greatest films in American movies.

Among other things - the books and the movies have quite a following of fans! Part of it is the amazing and wonderous world that Tolkien created. J.R.R Tolkien is really amazing - he was familiar with more than 20 languages and created his own languages for the different races of hobbits, elves, dwares and men in the Lord of the Rings. Check out this amazing writer (donned one of the 50 most influential British writers of all time) at the Tolkien Society.

The movies created for the trilogy really capture such detail and honor the details of this amazing world that Tolkien envisioned. If you haven't seen it yet - we would recommend the extended version for each of the movies -because it has scenes that had to be cut from the theatrical debut (for time reasons) and also because of all the amazing special features that showcases how the artists, actors, director, producers, set designers, cast and crew all worked - and takes you into their creative process and genius. We hope you enjoy this week's Cinema pick and have a chance to see it, if you haven't already!! (although be warned that if you see one, you are going to want to see the next two !!!)

This week we have a special guest designer!! Carol Dunstan of Inkantations and Inkarnations!! Carol is an amazing artiste with a great eye for detail, beauty and elegance in all her works. She is an avid fan of LOTR and we were thrilled that she would be our guest designer for this movie! Carol has continued to amaze me this week - she has created 6 cards for this challenge! YES - SIX cards!!!! So what we thought that we would do is showcase one of them each day! SO, make sure that you come back to our post everyday - to see what Carol's next creation is !!!

Sankari's Fellowship of the Ring Card/Project

First of all - I am just so darn excited about this week's movie. I have read Tolkien's books since I was 14 - and I used to read the trilogy, the Hobbit and other's at least once a year, since I was 14 (although thinks made a lot more sense after the age of 20 :) I just watched this movie again for the card inspiration - and fell in love with it all over again - all the details, all the beauty, the landscape, the music, the magic and the "fellowship" just totally made my heart sing - and I was spinning in all the possibilities of inspiration for this movie!

Second of all, I have to thank Carol for sending me the link for this idea. I was running out of mojo :) and so when I asked Carol if she had any ideas to spare - she sent me this link for Lembas bread. I originally was going to do another project (actually was working on it last night - when at some point I scrapped it because it wasn't coming out like it was in my brain - and so I turned to the next project I had in mind was to create a lembas card holder with a little note.
According to Tolkien, Lembas is a special bread created by the Elves that gave to the fellowship for immediate energy, lightness and nourishment. The are little like breadcakes, wrapped in a special leaf - in this way they last for months. When the Fellowship left the forest belonging to the Lady of the Wood, they were given gifts for their journey onward - among them was Lembas bread. This part of the movie is seen in the Extended Edition of the movie (not seen in the theatrical debut of the movie).

I looked up the Elvish words for Friendship, Love and Loyalty and then printed them out adhered it one side with the english translation on the other side. The font that I used to print it out in english is an Elven font. Within that note - you can pull up a smaller greeting in the Elven tongue (Quenya - that Tolkien created) that says Elen sila lumenn' omentielv: and is translated as : "A star shines on the hour of our meeting." I thought that the theme of friendship, love and loyalty just surrounds this movie. I really loved doing this project and loved IMing Carol through the night talking about this, that and FOTR :)

Carol's Fellowship of the Ring Card (#1)

Firstly I have to say I was so dang surprised, chuffed and excited when I was asked to be guest designer for this week’s movie. I am a huge fan - I done the convention and costume thing, my ringtone is LOTR related, there are multiple things throughout the house that are LOTR related… you get the picture. I have been literally bouncing, and randomly giggling to myself all week as another idea pops into my head. Initially I couldn’t think where to start, and then I realised that starting wasn’t the problem… the problem would be stopping! Anyway, when I really thought about the one main thing that I wanted to focus on for this movie, it was the hobbits. Particularly their homey nature and fun-loving ways despite everything that is going on. While there is that undercurrent of trouble through the early part of Fellowship, it’s still largely fun times with Gandalf’s arrival and Bilbo’s party, so I kind of went with those. I had two main ideas in my head: the Party Tree and Bilbo’s door. I decided to combine them. So we kind of have a framed picture of the tree hanging on the front of Bilbo’s door, brass doorknob and all, along with the birthday banner. The tree and frame was simple enough, I had to dig around for a “brass” brad large enough for the proportion, and for the banner I printed that out from my computer (I have like 10 LOTR fonts, this one is ‘Hobbiton Brush Hand’). In the movie the banner has some green swirls around the writing, but I chose to move those to the bottom of the door. For me, LOTR is where I really fell in love with all those swirly sorts of patterns.

Being such a huge fan of these films, and knowing the incredible about of work and detail that went into making them, I felt I too had to put some work into this card that wouldn’t be initially obvious… so inside the card you have the hinge. I’m trying to be less anal and ignore the fact that my door opens on the wrong side and opens out rather than in as Bilbo’s does…

Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge # 13 -Mama Mia

YAY!! Finally the big reveal!! You guys had great guesses and it was one of the most fun sneak peek previews we have had!!! So for all of you who were wondering about those boards and beams of light in the sneak peek, here is the sneak peek photo (definitely sneaky!!!) :

See, this photo is not from a scary movie, just a hot guy movie nothing to be afraid of...LOL!!

You were all so stinkin' cute with your guesses..

Well, first a little bit about the movie Mama Mia!! For those of you who haven't seen it --- you really must!!! (unless you don't like musicals or ABBA, but for those of you who like musicals AND ABBA, then this movie is really, definitely for YOU!!!! This movie is just fantastic and full of fun and love and songs that will get you on your feet dancing!!

According to Wikipedia, Mama Mia is a stage to film movie that is based on the 1999 musical of the same name and is based on the songs of the hit group ABBA. It has become the MOST sucessful Hollywood musical of all-time and in Britain, it even beat out the movie Titanic for highest grossing film of all time!! Now, that is something!! You can read more about the movie here.

And for those of you who haven't seen it - you can check out the official home site of the movie version of Mama Mia! here. This is a great site - it shows a trailer for the movie, along with some great clips also! We hope you all have a chance to watch this beautiful, toe-tapping, amazingly fantastic musical!!! Its just full of beauty, sweetness and absolute fun!!!!!

So I ran down to my little studio this morning I only had a short time to make a card, and I just had to do two... I was really inspired with the textiles in this movie.. In Donna room on here bed there is a coverlet that's white with red and white embroidery. I love the simplistic beauty of the red and white... I choose the Sentiment on this card because "Life happens" and you just have to keep moving forward and enjoy every moment wether you planned it or not. In Donna's room there is a blue and white pillow that stood out in my mind. I had to make it, it reminded me of Greece's flag.. What is more Greek than blue and white. Jump over to my blog a see my favorite picture of Donna and her gals walking through the most beautiful fabric in the whole movie.. If I get a chance I want to make a project with that fabric as a inspiration...

So for my Husbands birthday this last July, he choose to go to "Mama Mia" and dinner for his b-day. We had a great time.. We both grew up listening to ABBA so we pretty much could sing along. I think my dad even had a 8-track. We had a great time watching this movie. There was a group of ladies in the front of the theater that got up and danced and sang along... If I would have had a group of girls, I probably would have danced and sang right along with them. I bought the sound track a week later... I just couldn't resist. My 5 year old (4 at the time) was at the park one day just swinging away and started belting out the song "Mama Mia" and my friend started laughing..... What have you and your mom been listening to I wonder... He loves to listen to the CD in the car but only he gets to sing along... If we sing he says "no singing please". My 10 year old know the music and is just so bummed that I won't let her watch the show... She will just have to wait a few years...

I got this movie for Christmas this year so I am sure I will be viewing it multiple times... I have watched it 3 times already.... :)

Sankari's Mama Mia Inspired Card

Okay - can I just say two things! First of all, you guys are AWESOME!! I had so much fun at the sneak peek last night (errr... this morning ;) I loved reading all your guesses and it was like a total slumber party!! Seriously, you guys totally are the best!! and secondly, I am soooooo excited about this movie!! I only watched it for the first time two days ago and already, I have seen the whole thing twice and certain songs about 30 times!! Just ask my poor dear husband, LOL!

I have to say, I kinda resisted watching this movie... don't ask me why... I mean, I completely adore Colin Firth and Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnon (ok... enough said!), but somehow, I just didn't want to watch it (what was I thinking!!!) and I knew this movie was coming up and I still hadn't seen it! but at the last minute, we got it and started watching it and thus started my love affair with this movie! I LOVE IT!!! So for all of you who might not have seen it - this movie musical is fan-tas-tic! or should I say FUN-tas-tic!!! (sorry, couldn't help it :) Seriously - its just absolute fun!!!

I had a project idea in my mind when I first started making a card for this movie - to make Aphrodite's Fountain of Love like seen in the movie and I was working on it... till suddenly when I looked at it -- it didn't so much look like a fountain - but more like a lot of mush thrown together... so I scrapped that idea really late in the game (just ask Ann and Samantha! who were up a little late with me ). So I fell back on my number 2 project idea (I had like a zillion project ideas for this movie... sheesh!) to create a card based on the song "Take a Chance on Me" using the colors pink and greek island water blue :). If you click on the song link above, it will take you to a Youtube video showing less than a minute of this song from the movie. I so love Julie Walter's doing this song!!! So from this song, I created this card:

I love this song - to me it totally summarizes this movie for me... (****spoiler alert for movie plot details - for those who don't want to know this - skip this paragraph :)
It shows the daughter Sophie taking a chance and inviting all her potential dads to her wedding, the three guys take a chance and leave their lives to come back to where they fell in love, Donna takes a chance at the end of the movie and reveals that she doesn't know who Sophie's dad is (which she was afraid to do since she didn't know what her daughter might think), Donna and Sam take a second chance on each other (soooo sweet!! and in the end they all take a chance on love and on following their dreams :) !!! Totally lOVE this song!! I have to dance everytime I sing... well, dancing and spinning around too :)

This movie: An Affair to Remember, is truly a GEM of a movie! For those of you who haven't seen this movie and would love to snuggle up and watch a witty, romantic, classy and classic love story - please check this movie out!!! It might be hard to find - but one good place to check it out might be at your local library. According to the Wikipedia, the American Film Institute has rated this movie as one of the most romantic movies of all time!!!!

Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge # 12 - An Affair to Remember

Good Saturday Everyone,

Hope all of you have had a wonderful holiday week! We have both been enjoying this week spending time with our famillies and feeling thankful for all of life's blessings. Thank you to all who carved some time to play along last week - we hope you will have some time to play along to this Saturday's Cinema pick: An Affair to Remember. This is such a classic classic classic movie! We were so excited to pick this movie for our Cinema Saturday Challenge - it is such a hidden gem of a movie. According to the American Film Institute, this movie is considered to be one of the most romantic movies of all time. This Oscar nominated film, was released in 1957 and stars the ever debonair Cary Grant and beautiful Deborah Kerr. The writing is so quick, charming and brilliant. The style is graceful and elegant and theme is utterly romantic. If you haven't seen this movie - you must! Here are some interesting facts about this movie from IMDb and Wikipedia:

• References to this movie in Nora Ephron's Sleepless in Seattle (1993), revitalized interest in the film, and led to 2 million additional sales of the 1957 classic on VHS
  
• Ingrid Bergman was the first choice to play Terry McKay.
  
• Nickie and Terry make their conditional promise to meet in six months at exactly the halfway point of the film (59-1/2 minutes into the 119-minute movie).
  
• A Bollywood film with the title Mann (1999) starring Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala was inspired by this movie.
• A 1994 remake reverting to the original title of Love Affair was written and interpreted by Warren Beatty, featuring his wife Annette Bening as the female protagonist, and also Katharine Hepburn in a small but pivotal role, which would prove to be her last screen appearance.
  

Sankari's An Affair to Remember inspired cards:

This is one of my father's favorite movies! I remember watching this when I was little with my dad - although back then I missed some of the meaning of the dialogue. He was totally excited that we were doing this movie this week - we had a lovely talk about our favorite scenes from this moive and then we got into a whole conversation about the best Cary Grant movies :)

This week, we are visitng my in-laws for Christmas vacation and I had a chance to watch this movie again with my mother-in-law and father-in-law. We are all just absolute fans of Cary Grant - that man defines elegance and grace - he is just classic. I loved sitting and watching this with my in-laws and sighing here and there at the same time with my MIL - by the end of the movie - we were both crying (even my FIL had a little tear)... sigh - i just love this movie!
Watching it again - I forgot how brilliant the dialogue is - it is so humorous and savy and this movie is full of very very smart writing. I love Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr's back and forth banter - so cute and clever and charming. I had so many ideas for making a card - but the two that I picked were inspired by 1) the fact that they both agreed to meet at the Empire State building 6 months later and 2) the song called: TomorrowLand.

The first card is inspired by the 6 month meeting place of the Empire State building. Deborah Kerr exclaims that the Empire State building is so tall that it is the closest thing to heaven. I wrote the sentiment: You were heaven sent" inspired by this part of the movie (Sketch inspired by Jen del Muro). (Anthonette - I think we were channeling the same wavelength - LOL!)


I also loved the song Tomorrowland - it was so sweet and the lyrics are just too sweet. The handwritten senitment: "May your troubles, like bubbles, vanish in the air" are the actual lyrics from the movie. I used bubble wrap over the DP in this card to represent the bubbles from the lyrics of the song....( on a sidenote, doesn't popping packing bubbles always help one's problems vanish into the air?) - (this sketch was inspired by Kazan)

I totally had so much fun watching this movie again with my in-laws and talking about it with my dad. I had a few more ideas for cards in my head inspired by this movie. We are leaving from Minneapolis tomorrow - so when I get back to my little craft corner maybe I will try to make some more cards :)

For the Sound of Music Cinema Saturday Challenge, we were unable to pick between Anthonette's lovely card and Samantha's lovely card. So we asked them both to be guest designers for this week's challenge. We were so happy that they both said yes! and that they were able to carve sometime out in their busy holiday program to play along with us and create these lovely creations:

"First of all, I feel so honoured to have been asked to create a card for this week's Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge....so huge thanks go to Sankari and Brooke for asking me :-). It almost turned into a drama of epic proportions. I've never seen the movie (yes, I live in a cave) so I zipped down to the local Civic Video store and tried to borrow it. No luck! They didn't have it. I then looked online to see if I could borrow it through iTunes. Again, no luck...they didn't have it either. Starting to feel a tad deseperate I checked YouTube hoping some naughty person had posted it....ARGHHHHHHHHH, no luck! I was starting to wave goodbye to my first-ever guest designer appearance.

On Christmas eve, I bit the bullet and headed down to the mall in a last ditch effort to find it. I went to Virgin...no luck, Sanity...no luck, EzyDVD...no luck, Target...no luck. I was hyperventilating (along with all the other last minute Christmas shoppers ;-). My last stop was Kmart...I was feeling defeated. I was flicking through the racks without enthusiasm, already composing my tragic email to Sankari in my head. I was so absorbed in my defeat I actually flicked right past the movie and had to go back to it! EUREKA!! I did a little happy dance right there in the aisle....a bit of Christmas eve entertainment for the security camera dude :-). Now, before you get tired of all my waffling...here is my card. I think you can guess where my inspiration comes from.

I have used Stampin' Up!'s 'Boatloads of Love' boat stamp set to recreate the Constitution...as seen through a porthole (created using Spellbinders Nestabilities circles and my Cuttlebug). I've decked the boat out with a love theme...of course. Perfect for Valentine's Day! The boat has been watercoloured with Classic ink and an aquapainter. I have used some retired Designer Series Paper to cover the heart and then painted it with Crystal Effects. I have also added Crystal Effects onto the water and fenders for some added texture. I have used white Liquid Applique on the exhaust cloud above the stack and I have recreated portholes on the Constitution using eyelets."

Here's my card and the inspiration for my "You are My Love Affair to Remember" card:

This is one of my favorite vintage movies. I've seen it several times. I LOVE Cary Grant movies and I love Deborah Kerr. I must admit that I saw "Sleepless in Seattle" first when it was released in 1993. I loved how they weaved in the story about meeting on the roof of the Empire State Building just like Nickie and Terry. The building plays such a prominent role in both movies that I had to use the image of the Empire State Building as my inspiration for this card. I got the image from this site.

A little over 9 years ago, one of my sisters and I took my parents on a Mediterranean cruise. We had an overnight stop New York (we were actually staying close to the JFK airport). My sister is pretty adventurous. My dad stayed back in the hotel. My mom, my sister, and I ventured off in the subway and made our way to Manhattan (my sister is the only one who had been to the city before while she attended Cornell University). Our destination...the Empire State Building! We had a great time. The problem was getting back to our hotel. It was almost midnight, so the subway became a little scary. At one point, we were convinced we were being followed by some young men. I though we were going to be mugged. Whew...we got back safely. Seeing NY city from the top of the Empire State Building was worth all the effort.

Christiane's card really caught our attention - we loved her Stampboard Angels card. She used such a cool technique with tiles and the effect was really beautiful and unique. The sentiment is perfect and the layout was elegant! We hope Christiane that you will display the Audrey in your side bar! Your card is just beautiful!

Friday Sneak Peek -

We hope you all had a very merry Christmas. We both did... We are in different parts of the United States and both up to our eyeballs in SNOW.. Nothing like a white Christmas to make your heart smile.... For this weeks' presentation we ask that you all try to guess using your best resource - "YOU" - and maybe a family member or sweetie pie... If you have to use modern technology please don't post your guess until after 10:00 p.m. We just love hearing all the completely random guesses, but the technological methods of taking short cuts really takes some of the fun away...

Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge # 11 - It's a Wonderful Life

We are so excited to present to you Frank Capra's 1946 Oscar nominated classic: "It's a Wonderful Life"  for this week's Cinema Saturday Challenge. And even though we tried to trick you showing you a colorized pic of this classic black and white movie - you guys still guessed it. This picture that was colorized was made for a contest to colorized black and white pictures. The link for where this picture came from is here.

This is such a wonderful  and inspiring movie about love, friendship and the power that each of us has on making the lives of each other better and richer. This film was rated as the NUMBER ONE most inspiring film by the American Film Institute - that is pretty amazing! Here are some fun facts about It's a Wonderful Life from Wikipedia:

- the role was originally written with Cary Grant in mind

- this is Donna Reed's first starring role - Ginger Rogers was offered this role, but turned it down!

- Vincent Price was considered for the role of Mr. Potter

- This Christmas classic was filmed during a heat wave!!

- Frank Capra invented a new way to give the illusion of snow - before that they painted cornflakes white and dropped them!

I just love it when everything finally makes sense to George... He really get his sense of self worth. We realizes how many people love and respect him.  All the people in the town including his family are willing to make a sacrifice to help him out.. So the letter from Clarence just sums it up for me:

A true friend won't leave you when times are hard.. They rise to lift you up... I challenge you all to find someone how could use a little holiday cheer and earn yourself some wings..

Here is Sankari's Card:

I have so many favorite parts of this movie: the gym scene where they are all dancing, George and Mary falling in love, George meeting Clarence, George realizing his impact on all those around him and how the community comes forth to rally around them - but my favorite part is ZuZu's line "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings." Just love it - because she is just so darn cute, and George holding her with his family near the Christmas tree saying that always makes me smile - you can watch the ending of this movie with this scene in it here:

Even after seeing this movie so many times growing up - I loved watching it again - man - it is such a good movie. Jimmy Stewart is awesome and Donna Reed - is just so beautiful! My parents and I used to watch this movie growing up around the Christmas season - they are visiting us right now - and so it was fun to watch this with them and remember my childhood. 

I love the message that each of us has such power in all that we do and say and to never feel like we haven't made a difference. I just want to thank all of you that I have met through this site for inspiring and encouraging me - you guys are just too sweet!! Thank you so much for coming over here and playing along in our challenges - we have so much fun doing these and hope you do too!! Its so nice to be part of such an amazing blogging community and meet such wonderful artistes as yourself!!!

Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge - # 10 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Good Saturday morning!!! Can you believe that we are on Challenge #10 already!!! WOW!

This week's movie pick is .... Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (also known as the Philosopher's stone) (the images for the challenge pic can be found here and here). We have to say that we are BEYOND impressed with your guessing abilities! You guys are waaaay tooo good! Even after Brooke snapped the picture from off the TV - you guys still guessed it - wow!

Well, we were excited to do the Harry Potter movies - they are so fun and imaginative. We thought that we could just focus on the first one (maybe do the others later) so that if someone just wanted to focus on some of the elements from the first movie they could - or if they wanted to do some general themes from Harry Potter they could too.

The Harry Potter series is based on the seven best selling novels by JK Rowling as she details the journey of young Harry Potter (from age 11 to age 18) and his journey at the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, the adventures with his friends who become like his family and his realization of who he is and his place in the world.

This magical series is being translated into the silver screen with the first Harry Potter released 2001. Its beautiful to watch this series not only to see how the books get translated into a movie - but also to see these characters literally grow in front of you - its amazing to look at the pictures of these kids from the first movie to the movie that is currently going to be released. The first time this movie was ever shown on T.V. was at Christmas time now it's a tradition in America to broadcast it every year.

Brooke's Card:

When the Harry Potter book first came out my children where so much younger.. My Husband read then aloud to all the family every night... My Daughter was only about 2 so she really didn't get a lost out of the story just the experience... One of the best moments was when we left the movie theater and the boys said to me "The Book is so much better than the movie" YES!!! We succeeded! Now my oldest son will re-read a book over and over... He also said I would rather wait for ever and watch it in a mini-series so I could see more... We always got so excited to receive the new book in the mail.. I will post a picture of us the day we got a Harry Potter book in the mail on my blog... I will also post the many pictures of us are the Harry clan over the years...

The card I made for this challenge is for my Brother-in-law's birthday party this sunday... So I tried to make it a little less sparkly and a little more monochromatic... It's also the first time I have ever used This Papertry owl set I have had sense the first release of it... Sad but true... I really enjoyed using it... I will have to break into my other sets that are still un-used.

I love the Harry Potter series and the films as well - and I can't even tell you how many ideas were running around in my head - it was so hard to choose one theme - oh my gosh - you could go nuts --- there is just so much to choose from!

The theme that I went with - was that of discovery - the first book is all about discovery to me - Harry's journey to discover who his parent's really were - who he really is and his entry into a whole new magical world. I was inspired to make this card from thinking of opening a door into a different world - and so the door on the outside of the card is opens and the inside of the door (where there is a pic of a hand holding a wand says: Magic Awaits...) the whole card then opens up - and the inside of the card reads: Hope your New Year is filled with Magic! I love these Harry Potter books (as soon as I would get my hands on a copy - I had to read the whole thing - it was impossible to put it down :) Its been so great to see these movies and watch Harry, Hermione and Ron grow up in front us on the screen. Love reading and seeing all the adventures that they find themselves in - and in this book - I love how JKR shows the reader this whole new world that Harry is entering into.

Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge # 9 - The Sound of Music

It's time for another Cinema Saturday Challenge!! This week our movie pick is the musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein: The Sound of Music! YAY!!!! You guys are really the hardest crowd to stump - you all totally knew what the sneak peek picture was - but it was great to read all your guesses!!! You are all just the best! This musical was translated into the silver screen in 1965, six years after it opened on Broadway. This movie musical has won 5 Oscars, including best picture! It is such a classic and has since then become one of the most famous movie musicals world wide. You can read more about this movie here on Wikipedia.

Here are some interesting trivia of The Sound of Music take from the IMDB website

• "The Sound of Music is of only 4 productions to win both the Best Play Tony (1960) and the Best Picture Oscar (1965). The other 3 are My Fair Lady (1957/1964), A Man For All Seasons (1962/1966) and Amadeus (1981/1984).
  
• When the Best Picture Oscar went to The Sound of Music (1965) (April 18, 1966), it was the first time the Academy Awards had ever been broadcast in color (ABC TV)
• Director Robert Wise considered Yul Brynner for the role of Captain Von Trapp.
• During the filming of the opening shot of Julie Andrews taken from a helicopter, Julie Andrews relates that although she tried digging her heels into the ground and bracing herself, on every take she was knocked over by the powerful helicopter downdraft. Both Brooke and I love this movie and loved that this is something that we could watch with our kids -its such a great family movie. And we had fun singing some of the musical numbers from when we were talking on the phone :) Here are our "Sound of Music" Cinema inspired cards and projects:

Random thought about what I learned about this movie:

Did you know that one the the Von Trapp children in the movie was played by Heather Menzines who is the later Robert Urich Wife...  The lived here is Utah when he was alive.. I read an article about Marie Von Trapp and learned that the real Marie was not so sweet and kind.. I was quite the opposite.. I think I had heard that years ago it rang a bell or two.. 

I was looking at loads of pictures on the internet getting ready for the release of this challenge and I had know Idea that Edelweiss was so fussy or "soft" as they sing about... I just pictured soft and white meaning delicate not literally fuzzy..  I also read that Maria was married in the late 20"s so they live in Austria for almost 10 years before they had to escape from the war.

Here is Sankari's Project Inspired by the song "These are a few of my Favorite Things":

I have watched this musical I don't know how many times growing up... more than 25 times easily :) For me personally, this movie brings back so many childhood memories. I remember my cousin singing the song "Edelweiss" to me - I was seven years old - she was 6 and had the sweetest voice ever! I have loved that song ever since - and every time I hear it - I can also hear my cousins voice singing it... I had dialogs memorized and the songs totally memorized as well - although my singing ability was far from great :)

I couldn't decide which direction to go - but finally landed on creating a little birthday gift for my husband from the song: "My Favorite Things". I loved this song growing up and it was fun to watch this with my son and see his enjoyment of this and all the other songs. Since this was inspired by the song of favorite things.. I gathered some favorite memories to put together for my husband. This wooden box was given to me by my father-in-law years ago when we first go married. It has since then held our spare keys, change and little kinck knacks.... I thought that it would be nice to have this box , house our favorite memories. I covered the box in shades of the blue and green that are inspired by the Sound of Music - love the shades of the blue and green of the hills alive with music :) - this paper is from K & Co.

The top half of the box has pictures of our children punched out in 1/4" circle and then popped up on dimensionals. The picture of our son holding his sister after we brought her home, has her little bangle adorning the picture - I can't believe that she wore that. There is a bell that I adhered with metal glue on the top panel also - I got this beautiful bell when I was visiting the Forbidden City in Beiging. The ringing of the bell is supposed to bring good wishes to your surroundings... and the kinda cool part is that every time the box is opened - it rings the bell :) The bottom half contains a mini scrapbook that I created for him with forgotten pics of our kids, my son's handprint and artwork and little love note for his heart from mine. It also has a few sentimental memorablia, like a special rock that we picked up in India and a beaded necklace that was dipped in the Ganges. I hope he will like it - his birthday is still 2 weeks away - the key now is to make sure he doesn't read this and that my son won't reveal the secret birthday present hiding spot to him :)

Amy writes: " This first card is a mirror of those "curtain play clothes" that Maria made for the Von Trapp children. I made the card & was asking myself who on earth would I give a card like this to & then I hand wrote in "Hang in there" for a buddy of mine who is going through the rollercoaster of selling her home to buy another. Ahhhh. Anyways, I'm not overly fond of my chicken scratch handwriting, but the phrase fit."

Amy writes: "The second card is my absolute FAVORITE scene in the movie, that I watched over & over again. Liesl meeting her beau by the gazebo. {sigh} I wanted that dress & it was so sweet. Loved it."
